We couldn’t decide what to do for this, our 10th episode of Still Cool Right. It’s been three years of blood, sweat, and beers to get to this most notable of milestones. Clip show? No, too much work. Book Jeff Spicoli to book Van Halen for our birthday? No, he’s gone on to become a serious actor. There is a ton of pressure when it comes to the number ten. Pearl Jam’s breakout album. Perfect scores in gymnastics. One less than Spinal Tap’s amplifiers go. All of these are tens. Does this podcast stand shoulder-to-shoulder with these giants? Absolutely not. Well, unless you prefer origins of icon hip hop samples, long conversations about superheroes’ dicks and two guys in their 40’s waxing poetic about when they were cool.
On this, a very special episode of Still Cool Right, we saddle up the barstools, cheers our organic cocktails (blame Gavin), and deliver one of our funniest podcasts of all time. Season 1 is a wrap!
The Beastie Boy’s iconic, ILL Communication (1994), contains, we would guess, the most quoted sample of all time. At least amongst the derelicts, we call friends. On “B-Boys Making with a Freak Freak,” the beat drops out and a man says, “shit, if it’s going to be that kind of party, I’m gonna stick my dick in the mashed potatoes.” The beat roars back and the song continues. But, where did that sample come from? Mantan Moreland, actor turned comedian, that’s where.
Here is a longer sample than what we played on the blog and the cover to his party record, “That ain’t my finger!”
Did you ever want to know what your favorite superhero’s special purpose looked like? No? Well, too bad because we are going to show it to you. We had no clue that DC had a mature audiences imprint. Black Label is just that. More violent. More mature. More dick for sure. Apparently VICE has also tackled the subject with a longer form piece on superheroes and whether-or-not they are circumcised. Yeah, we talk about that shit on this episode. See below for the Dark Knight’s dark knight.
Everybody knows that asshole at the bar. The one who is snapping their fingers, ordering mojitos and can’t make up their damn mind about what they want. If you are old enough to go to a bar, there are unwritten rules you need to follow to keep from pissing off the bartender and pretty much ruining any shot at being served a delicious cocktail. Warning – Gavin used to be a bartender and gets all ranty remembering what it was like to deal with a real d-bag on the other side of the bar. Listen to avoid being that d-bag.
Deezer, the GoBots of music streaming services claims to have pinpointed the exact age we stop seeking new music. You know who you are people. Still listening to the Killers, Hot Fuss and claiming the Weezer cover of Toto’s “Africa” is actually “pretty good.” You aren’t alone though. Globally, the twenties are the point where, at various ages by country, we come up with a myriad of excuses for why we no longer have the time or energy to seek new music. Yes, Trap music has become a go-to excuse for the Still Cool Right crew. It sucks. But that’s just because we are cursed with knowing what good hip hip sounds like. Don’t @ us trap fans. You know what. Do fucking @ us because we want to know why Trap is cool. Who knows, you might end up on a future episode of Still Cool Right. Rock music isn’t fairing much better either BTW. With Imagine Dragons and 21 Pilots taking up 40% of the billboard top 10 rock songs, rock has hit a point of idiocracy not yet achieved in modern times. Anyways. We discuss why it’s important and actually easy to stay connected to new music. Dive in!
The Casbah in San Diego is home for a lot of Still Cool Friends and has been so for 30-years this month. Wow. As Gavin states in the pod, 1989 was the founding of The Casbah and Taylor Swift’s second best album. As an aside, why a 47-year-old man has a teen crush on Taylor Swift is, well… gross. That said, one of us will be making our way to San Diego to see one of our favorite bands EVER reunite. That’s right, Transfer is back. Not only are they some of the best people in San Diego, but they are also a killer band that has been missed in the scene. Catch them as well as Hot Snakes, T.S.O.L., the Melvins, The Dragons, Via Satellite, Goodbye Blue Monday, Pinback, Three Mile Pilot, and The Silent Comedy. Congratulations on your success Tim Mays (owner) and one of us (not Gavin) will see you at the Casbah on January 25th!
Stay Still Cool, Friends,
XO // JRS & Gav
